Sector Consultation for the NSW Contemporary Music Strategy
Create NSW - New South Wales, Australia
Create NSW, as the State Government body responsible for policy, funding and leadership across the arts and cultural industries, made a commitment through the Night-Time Economy Taskforce, to develop a NSW Contemporary Music Strategy. Contemporary music is invaluable not only to our cultural scene, but also to the economy, a multibillion-dollar industry made up of musicians, bands, artists, industry professionals, and sector representatives across a diverse music ecosystem. Employing tens of thousands of people, reaching an audience of millions and making a major contribution to Australia’s copyright industries, contemporary music has long been overlooked in favour of other, traditional forms of music such as classical and opera.
Recognising these facts, Create NSW set out to work with the music sector to build an understanding of the challenges and opportunities for contemporary music in NSW, and ideas for its growth. Left Bank Co. were engaged to design and deliver a comprehensive engagement program, facilitating numerous workshops across Sydney, Western Sydney and through regional NSW, as well as with youth groups and CALD representatives. Through structured sessions, we ran a process of discovery and ideation, tapping into the unique needs, desires, challenges and solutions specific to different parts of the music sector across the State. The information gathered from this engagement was distilled into insights, and provided to Create NSW to inform the development of the goals, strategies, actions, and priority areas that will guide the NSW Government’s future initiatives and investment in contemporary music across the State.
