Shifting the developer’s mindset

 

Brief


Left Bank Co. was approached by a significant landowner in the Bay Area of San Francisco planning a once-in-a-generation urban renewal project. Their brief was to help them think about the ownership, governance and activation models that could deliver a healthy public life, including opportunities for locally owned businesses, start-ups, creative businesses, arts and culture and community initiatives.

 

Approach


We surveyed the world for alternative development and governance models that deliver value outside of the traditional highest and best use paradigm which usually dominates the property sector. We presented these case studies with insights and analysis of how they apply to the local context and the client’s ambition to retain ownership of their site.

 

Impact


This primary research has been used to change the conversation amongst senior leadership, influencing thinking in terms of land uses, lease terms, ownership and governance to allow a variety of business models and programs to flourish. It is championing a meaningful outcome that will sustain the local economy and character through urban transformation.
