Meeting the music makers

Brief

Create NSW made a commitment through the Night-Time Economy Taskforce to develop an NSW Contemporary Music Strategy  to create the right kind of support and pathways for this subsector of the creative industries. Contemporary music is invaluable not only to our cultural scene, but also to the night-time economy as a multibillion-dollar industry made of musicians, bands, artists, agents, promoters and others. Recognising this, Create NSW set out to work with the music sector to build an understanding of the challenges and opportunities for contemporary music in NSW.

Approach

Left Bank Co. were engaged to design and deliver a comprehensive engagement program, facilitating numerous workshops with sector leaders across Sydney, Western Sydney and through regional NSW, including Byron Bay, Orange and Albury. We also conducted engagement with youth groups and culturally and linguistically diverse representatives. The information gathered from this engagement was distilled into insights and provided to Create NSW to inform the development of the goals, strategies, actions, and priority areas that will guide the NSW Government’s future initiatives and investment in contemporary music across the State.

Impact

The engagement was an important and timely conversation to be had in the lead up the relaxation of NSW’s lock-out-laws, demonstrating to a cross section of the music sector and to Create NSW the shared value and opportunities that can be leveraged to ensure contemporary music can play a key role in the revival of the night-time economy.
