Navigating the challenge of designing and delivering creative space

Brief

Creative Victoria in association with the Office of the Victorian Government Architect and the City of Melbourne came together to commission Left Bank Co. to support efforts to better communicate how to plan for, design and deliver creative spaces. The brief was to create easy-to-use guides that would help developers and local governments plan for creative spaces, not only making the case for the inclusion of creative spaces in existing and new urban setting, but also making the process of planning and designing them easier.

Approach

Left Bank Co. drew on our knowledge and experience in the field of making space for creativity to create a suite of resources to guide decision-makers through the various spaces of creative space delivery. The guides were designed to help understand different types of creative spaces, their critical success factors and how they are best clustered together for maximum impact on the sector and the community. Different typologies of space were illustrated with a best-in-class benchmark alongside top-line briefing considerations, planning and building code requirements, and adjacencies and co-dependencies.

Impact

Our work on the Creative Space Design Guides quickly enabled both City and State Government to navigate conversations with stakeholders involved in creative space projects, not only proving the case for creative spaces but helping to quickly interpret and translate needs to tangible opportunities. The Guides are also part of a national effort to create free and accessible resources to improve both the quality and quantum of creative spaces in Australia.
