Visioning for the Antarctic & Science Precinct

Collaboration to define a new public experience for Hobart

Brief

The Tasmanian State Government, together with Hobart City Council, the Australian Antarctic Centre, the University of Tasmania and CSIRO developed a proposal for an Antarctic and Science Precinct for the Hobart harbour, leveraging the city’s role as a global leader in the research and exploration of the Antarctic. As part of this precinct, a public-facing experience was proposed in order to promote public engagement with the history of and the current work being conducted into Antarctic research

Approach

Left Bank Co. was engaged by the State Government to work with the project’s working group to further explore, enhance and refine the vision for this public-facing experience. Through a series of engagement sessions, augmented with industry investigations and benchmark research, we challenged the team to think about the different visitor experiences the public audience should have, and the realities of the spatial, operational and governance model that would enable these to function.

Impact

Through this work, Left Bank Co. helped the project team to finalise its vision for the visitor experience, by understanding its own strategic objectives, its target audience and considering the wide range of possible engagement points the public could have with the Precinct. The vision was augmented with design principles in order to help transition the vision into a design brief as the project progresses.
